How it works
Laws, contracts and customer policies can require that personal or financial data stays in a region, such as the EU or the US. Residency covers where data is stored at rest, where it is processed and where backups live. It is related to but distinct from data sovereignty, which concerns which country's laws apply to the data.
Example
A European lender requires that its borrowers' accounting data is stored only in EU data centers, so it asks every vendor in its stack where data is stored and processed.
In integrations
Residency matters most for stored data. Unify Int is designed to offer region choices for stored data on enterprise plans and pass-through mode for objects you prefer not to store at all. Current regions and controls are listed on the Trust page, which is the source of truth. Residency questions usually come from security reviews and procurement. Know where your providers store and process data before an enterprise deal reaches that stage, not during it.
