Unify Int vs building in-house
Building in-house gives you full control and no vendor dependency, and it makes sense for one or two platforms with spare capacity. Each additional ledger, ERP or storefront adds auth, mapping, monitoring and on-call work for good. Unify Int shares that work across platforms and adds a team that can build it with you.
SIDE BY SIDE
Unify Int and Building in-house, compared.
Unify Int is in developer preview; our column describes what the platform is designed to do and shows status where it matters.
| Criterion | Unify Int | Building in-house |
|---|---|---|
| Categories covered | Accounting, ERP, payments, bank feeds, commerce, PIM, inventory and ads. Pre-launch: status shown per integration. | Whatever you build, one platform at a time. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Finance depth (ERP, multi-entity) | ERP API designed for subsidiaries, dimensions, custom fields and approval states in NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Dynamics 365 and Acumatica. Pre-launch. | Full control; every ERP's subsidiaries, custom fields and approvals are yours to model. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Product data (PIM, inventory) | A full Product Data family: Catalog/PIM, Inventory, Orders & Commerce and Ads APIs on the same model as finance data. Pre-launch. | Separate connectors per PIM, storefront and warehouse system. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Write-back | Designed for create, update and delete with idempotency keys and validation before submit. Write is shown per object only where confirmed. | Full control; idempotency, validation and audit are yours to build. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Bank feeds | Bank Feeds API to push transactions into ledgers. Pre-launch; status per ledger. | You apply to each ledger's feed program and build each feed. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Data storage model | Pass-through or sync-and-store, chosen per object. Designed; pre-launch. | Your choice, built and operated by your team. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| AI agents / MCP | Unify Agents (MCP) with scoped tools, approval steps and audit logs. On the roadmap. | You design, secure and maintain your own tools and permissions. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Governance (approvals, audit) | Approval policies, scoped permissions and an audit log of every write, including agent writes. Pre-launch. | You build approvals, audit logs and retention. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Services offered | Unify Technology Center: strategy workshops, implementation, migration, custom connectors and managed integrations. | Your own engineers, plus contractors if you hire them. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Pricing transparency | Tiers and a services rate card published on the pricing page; prices show "Talk to us" until set. | Engineering salaries plus ongoing maintenance and on-call time. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Free tier / sandbox | Free sandbox access for early-access teams and design partners during the developer preview, on request. | Vendor sandboxes where each platform offers them. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
| Primary buyer | SaaS, fintech and commerce software teams, plus finance operators through the Technology Center. | Your own engineering team. General build considerations, not a vendor claim. |
DIFFERENCES
Where Unify Int is different.
Shared work across platforms
Auth, token refresh, rate limits, pagination, error mapping and monitoring are built once in Unify Int, not once per connector.
Maintenance is not your roadmap
When a platform changes its API, the connector behind the Unify Graph is updated and your code keeps calling the same objects.
Help when you want it
The Technology Center can build integrations with you, migrate your in-house connectors, or run them under Managed Integrations.
AN HONEST VIEW
When building in-house may fit better.
You need one or two platforms
If you only ever need one or two integrations and have spare engineering capacity, building in-house can cost less overall.
The integration is your product
If deep, custom behavior on one platform is your core differentiator, owning the connector end to end may be worth the cost.
TECHNOLOGY CENTER
Switching? We run the migration.
The Technology Center maps what you use today to the Unify Graph, runs both in parallel and cuts over in batches.
Migration
Move off Codat, another unified API or in-house code without breaking connections.
Implementation
We scope, build and launch your integrations, then hand them over.
Frequently asked questions
How do we compare the cost?
Count build time, ongoing maintenance, monitoring, on-call and support for each platform, then compare with platform fees. The build vs buy guide walks through a worksheet.
Can we keep some integrations in-house?
Yes. Many teams keep one core integration in-house and use Unify Int for the long tail. Passthrough requests also let you reach native endpoints when you need them.
Can you take over connectors we already built?
Yes. The Migration service maps them to the Unify Graph and proves parity with a parallel run before any customer moves.
Is Unify Int live today?
Unify Int is in developer preview. Sandbox access is available to early-access teams and design partners, and every integration page shows its current status: live, beta, roadmap or via the Technology Center.
